How do I access a Standard?

You need to access a Standard such as Australian standards (AS or AS/NZS) or International standards (ISO).

Answer

The Techstreet database includes selected Australian and ISO standards relevant to teaching and learning at Wodonga TAFE, including those referenced in the National Construction Code of Australia (NCC).

For more information and to access Techstreet, see the link below to the Library homepage: Find Standards.

Setting up access to Techstreet

First time users will need to complete the following steps BEFORE accessing the Techstreet database.

  1. Install Adobe Acrobat Reader (you may already have this installed)
  2. Install FileOpen plugin (this has been installed on the computers in the LIRNspace and the Library)
  3. Create an account to access Techstreet.

You must use your @wodongatafe.edu.au email address to create an account.

Creating an account requires entering a Corporate key.  You can contact the library for the corporate key, or this information may be available from your teacher.  Your teacher can also arrange the creation of accounts for the whole class by sending a class list to the library.

To install the necessary apps and to create an account, see the link below to Setting up access to Techstreet for the first time.

The Techstreet database enables you to search all standards, but only a select list of standards relevant to Wodonga TAFE courses are able to be viewed in full text.  These will be indicated by the Download or View Online button.

Teachers are able to request standards that are not currently part of the Techstreet subscription if it is relevant to teaching and learning.  Requests from students will be referred to their teacher.

Troubleshooting

I get an error message when I try to open a downloaded standard.

If you have attempted to open the secure PDF in a browser (ie. Chrome, Edge, Safari, etc.) then you will see an error message "Failed to load PDF document".  Documents downloaded from Techstreet must be opened in the Adobe Acrobat Reader app.

If you are opening the file in Adobe Acrobat Reader, you must also have the FileOpen plugin installed before you can view secure PDFs.

If you are attempting to open the file in Adobe Acrobat Reader and you get a message "Invalid user. Something has gone awry.  Please re-download this document" you may have been logged out from the Techstreet database (by clicking on Logout).  Try logging in to Techstreet again, then go to your downloaded file and open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader.   If this doesn't work you may need to re-download the document.

TIP: If you need to access downloaded standards, don't select Logout when you exit the database - just close the browser tab instead.  Just be aware that it may take 10 minutes to release the single user online viewing license if you have used this method.

I have found the standard I need, but the database says there are no licenses available at the moment and to try again in 10 minutes.

Viewing documents online from Techstreet is restricted to a single concurrent user.  If you see this message it means someone else is currently viewing a standard online.  Try again later.

You should be able to select to download a standard, even when the single concurrent user license is being used by someone else viewing a standard online.

ISO standards are limited to a single concurrent user, including files which have been downloaded and saved to a device. Try going into offline mode by turning off your wifi or internet connection first, then open the file in Adobe Acrobat Reader.

I have downloaded a standard previously, but when I go to open it with Adobe Acrobat Reader it says it is unable to open the file.

If you are attempting to open the file in Adobe Acrobat Reader and you get a message "Invalid user. Something has gone awry.  Please re-download this document" you may have been logged out from the Techstreet database (by clicking on Logout).  Try logging in to Techstreet again, leave the browser open, then go to your downloaded file and open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader.   If this doesn't work you may need to re-download the document.

TIP: If you need to access downloaded standards, don't select Logout when you exit the database - just close the browser tab instead.  Just be aware that it may take 10 minutes to release the single user online viewing license if you have used this method.

For ISO standards, this may be because another user is currently accessing a standard and the single concurrent user license is in use.  The database will detect when ISO files are in use, even if they are downloaded onto your device.  Try going into offline mode by turning off your wifi or internet connection first, then open the file in Adobe Acrobat Reader.

If you have tried to move the file from the location you first downloaded it to then it will probably not open.  Access the Techstreet database and download the file again.

We recommend you print a copy of standards you need to use regularly, for your personal use.

“Invalid parameters. Please re-download this document” error

Techstreet will be applying an upgrade which may result in this error when trying to open DRMed PDFs downloaded before 13/4/2023. You will need to re-download the PDF to access it.

I downloaded a standard to a USB drive but now I can't open the file.

The secure PDFs are associated with the device you download them to, so you will not be able to take a standard downloaded on a USB and use it on another computer. Always download to the hard drive of the computer you are using (ie. Downloads folder or C:\ drive folders).

Why can't I print more than one copy at a time?

The standards are secure PDFs which have Digital Rights Management (DRM) controls on them which govern how they may be used.  One of these is to limit your ability to print to only one copy at a time.
